Air conditioning in Lebanon works harder than almost anywhere. It runs through a long humid summer, it is fed by two different power sources with different voltage behaviour, and it is often installed in a rush. Failures are predictable. Knowing which one you have keeps you from paying for the wrong repair.
- Symptoms map fairly reliably to causes — you can narrow it down before anyone arrives.
- Low refrigerant is never a "top-up" job. It means there is a leak, and the leak is the repair.
- Voltage swings between EDL and generator supply kill more compressors here than heat does.
- Age, refrigerant type and compressor condition decide repair versus replace.
Start with the symptom
Before you call anyone, spend two minutes observing. What the unit is doing narrows the field enormously, and it lets you tell whether the technician who arrives is diagnosing or guessing.

The refrigerant myth
Refrigerant is not fuel. It circulates in a sealed loop and is not consumed. If a unit is low on gas, it is because gas escaped, which means there is a hole somewhere in the loop.
If someone recharges your system every summer without ever finding a leak, you are paying for the same repair on a subscription. Ask for the leak location. A competent technician will pressure-test and show you.
Why compressors fail early here
The single biggest killer of air conditioners in Beirut is not heat. It is the switchover between EDL and generator supply, and the voltage instability that comes with it. A compressor motor hit repeatedly with under-voltage draws more current, heats up, and degrades the windings.
- Fit protection at the panel, not per device. A whole-home voltage protector guards everything at once and is the highest-value electrical upgrade in most Lebanese apartments.
- Let the unit rest after a cut. Restarting a compressor against high head pressure is punishing. Modern inverter units delay automatically; older ones do not.
- Check the outdoor unit has air. A condenser boxed in by a balcony enclosure or blocked by a neighbour's unit runs hot permanently.
- Clean the coils, not just the filters. Filters are the user's job. Coils are the technician's, and a dirty condenser coil raises running cost every single hour.

What actually drives the size of the job
Every quote you get will differ, and the differences are usually explainable. The honest way to compare offers is to compare scope, not the bottom line.

We quote a fixed figure once we have seen the unit, and you approve it before work starts. What we will not do is publish invented numbers for a job nobody has looked at — those are the numbers that get revised upward once the technician is already in your living room.
Repair or replace
- Under about seven years, with a findable fault
Repair. The rest of the system has life in it and parts are current.
- Compressor failure on an older unit
Usually replace. The compressor is the most expensive component; putting a new one in a tired system rarely pays back.
- Obsolete refrigerant
Lean toward replacement. You will fight for gas at every future service.
- Repeated failures in two summers
Something systemic is wrong — electrical supply, sizing or install quality. Fix that before buying anything.
- Renovating anyway
