Water Motor Not Pumping: A Diagnostic Walkthrough

Water pumps are replaced far more often than they need to be. In most of the calls we take, the pump is fine and something around it is not — a tripped breaker, an empty tank, a lost prime, a failed pressure switch. Work through it in order and you will usually find the fault before anyone quotes for a new motor.

Before you touch anything

Isolate the pump at its breaker. Pumps combine water and electricity in a small space, and a motor that "is not running" can start without warning the moment supply returns or a pressure switch closes.

The short version
  • A pump that hums but delivers nothing has almost always lost its prime or has a blocked suction.
  • A pump that does nothing at all is usually an electrical or pressure-switch problem, not a dead motor.
  • Constant starting and stopping points at the pressure vessel, not the pump.
  • Running a pump dry is what destroys them — never leave one cycling against an empty tank.

Work through it in this order

  1. Is there water to pump?

    Check the roof or ground tank level first. An empty tank explains everything downstream, and running against it will destroy the pump.

  2. Is there power at the pump?

    Check the dedicated breaker, and whether it trips the moment you reset it. A pump breaker that trips instantly means a motor or cable fault — stop there.

  3. Is it humming, or silent?

    Humming means it is receiving power and the motor is energised but the impeller is not moving water. Silence means the electrical path or the pressure switch is the problem.

  4. Has it lost prime?

    A centrifugal pump cannot lift air. If the casing is empty, it will spin without moving anything. Refilling the casing through the priming plug often solves it outright.

  5. Is the suction blocked?

    Check the strainer and the foot valve. Sediment in a Lebanese tank collects in exactly the place the pump draws from.

  6. Is the pressure switch working?

    A switch with corroded or welded contacts either never starts the pump or never lets it stop.

  7. Is the pressure vessel healthy?

    A waterlogged vessel makes the pump start and stop every few seconds. It is a cheap component that causes an expensive symptom.

What makes pumps fail early in Lebanon

  • Dry running. During water shortages, pumps cycle against empty tanks and cook their seals. A dry-run cut-out is inexpensive protection.
  • Voltage instability. Generator switchover under-voltage makes motors draw hard. See generator and electrical safety.
  • Sediment. Roof tanks accumulate silt, which reaches the impeller and the seals.
  • Oversizing. A pump too large for the system short-cycles constantly, and starts are what wear it out.
  • Outdoor exposure. Sun, rain and salt air on an unprotected motor shorten its life considerably.
One cheap upgrade worth doing

If your building suffers water interruptions, ask for a dry-run protection device. It stops the pump when there is nothing to draw, and it is far cheaper than the motor it protects.

When it really is the pump

If the casing is primed, the strainer is clear, the switch and vessel are healthy, supply is good, and it still hums without delivering, then the impeller or the motor is the fault. At that point the honest question is whether the pump is the right size for the building in the first place — replacing like for like a pump that was always wrong just resets the same clock.

Can I prime the pump myself?

Often yes — with the breaker off, open the priming plug and fill the casing until water appears. If it loses prime again immediately, the foot valve is leaking and needs a plumber.

How long should a water pump last?

Many years when it is correctly sized, protected against dry running and fed clean water. Most early failures in Lebanon trace back to one of those three.

Why is there no water only on the top floors?

That is usually pressure rather than the pump failing — tank level, an undersized pump for the head, or a partially blocked riser.

Do you clean tanks as well?
