How to Judge Aluminium Joinery Quality Before You Sign

Aluminium is the default in Lebanon for good reasons — it handles coastal air, it does not warp, and it holds large glazed openings. It is also where a lot of money gets wasted, because two windows that look identical in a showroom can behave completely differently in a January storm.

The parts that determine quality

Thermal break: what it actually is
Aluminium conducts heat extremely well, which is exactly what you do not want in a window frame. A thermal break is an insulating barrier inside the profile that separates the inner and outer faces. Without it, the inside of your frame follows the outdoor temperature, which means condensation forming on the frame in winter, then running down onto the reveal, then damp in the plaster.
Thermal break earns its place in bedrooms, living rooms and anywhere heated or cooled. For a store room, a service balcony or an unheated stairwell, a standard profile is a reasonable decision rather than a corner cut.
Installation is where jobs fail
We are called to more aluminium problems caused by fitting than by fabrication. The window arrives correct and is then installed into an opening that is out of square, packed badly, or sealed with the wrong material.
- The opening should be prepared, not forced. A frame twisted into an out-of-square reveal will never seal along its whole length.
- Fixings into sound substrate. Not into loose render, and at the spacings the system requires.
- Correct sealant, correctly tooled. A neutral-cure exterior sealant, on a clean dry surface, with a backing rod where the joint is deep.
- Drainage kept clear. Weep holes blocked by sealant or plaster turn the frame into a bath.
- A sill that throws water outward. The single most common cause of water appearing under a window.
- Making-good included. Someone has to re-plaster and paint the reveal afterwards. Agree who before the old frame comes out.
Choosing by exposure

What to ask for in the quote
Getting comparable quotes
Ask every supplier to quote against the same written specification, including profile system, glazing build-up, hardware, coating, and whether installation, sealing and making-good are included. Without that, you are comparing three different products and choosing the cheapest description.

The frames themselves last decades. Gaskets, hardware and sealant are the wearing parts, and they are what determine whether the window still performs at year fifteen.
For comfort and noise, yes, particularly on street frontages and sun-exposed elevations. The benefit is largest when the frame is thermally broken — the two work together.
Sometimes. If the profile and hardware are sound and the problem is perished gaskets or failed external sealant, resealing is a legitimate and much smaller job.
